BIGS LEADERS: This week you will see a difference in our lesson. We will be doing small groups after the big lesson together. This is a great time to build connections with the kids.

The connections you build with these kids aren't just nice to have - they're the foundation for everything else we're trying to accomplish. When a child feels seen, known, and valued by you, that relationship becomes the bridge for their learning and growth.

Think about it this way: kids don't engage deeply with activities or challenges because the activity itself is amazing. They engage because someone they trust and respect is inviting them in. Your relationship is what makes them willing to try something hard, bounce back from mistakes, and push past their comfort zone.

Here's what this looks like in practice: A first grader who trusts you will ask for help instead of shutting down. A fifth grader who feels connected to you will accept feedback without getting defensive. A shy kid will participate because you asked them to, even when they wouldn't otherwise.

These connections also give you insight into each child - you'll notice when something's off, when they need extra encouragement, or when they're ready for more responsibility. You can't guide growth in someone you don't really know.

So when you're learning names, noticing details about them, asking about their interests, or just sharing a laugh together - that's not extra. That's the work. The activities and lessons we do are important, but your relationship with each kid is what makes any of it stick.
